Let me introduce my friend Alexander, Alec for shot. He is twenty -seven and works as a detective at a Criminal Investigation Department. Heand his wife Helen have a good flat in a new district of the city. Itusually takes him twenty minutes to get to his department, on foot. As for
Helen, she is a lawyer. She doesn't work now because they have a two-yearold son, Nick by name.

Alec has a farther, a mother and a brother. Alec's father is a judgeand works at the court. As a rule, he is very busy and has little time forleisure. Alec's mother is a teacher at the Medical University. She trainsfuture doctors. Alec's brother is a pupil of the tenth form. He is fond ofsport and his dream is to become a detective.

Helen's parents are both doctors. They work at the hospital. Alecand Helen often visit their parents at weekends and on holidays. As a rule,they have a good time together.

MY WORK AND STUDIES

Let my introduce myself. My name is Steve. I am a student. Lastsummer I passed my entrance exam to the Academy of Economy and Law in
Khabarovsk and became a part-time student of the Law faculty. So I am verybusy now. I work as a clerk at the court.

My working day begins at 9 am and is over at 6 p.m. When I come tothe court I study documents, speak with people who ask for help and discussthe order of the day with the judge. Four times a week in the evening thestudents of our department attend lectures and tutorials in the Theory of
Law and State, History of Russia and other subjects. Once a week, on
Tuesday we have classes in English. At the last lesson we read andtranslated the text about the legal system in England. The text was ratherdifficult. It took me two hours to get ready with it. I try to get onlygood and excellent marks for my subjects. I am sure I will become а goodspecialist.

Мій робочий день починається о 9 ранку, а закінчується в 6 вечора.

Чотири рази на тижденьвечорами студенти нашого відділу відвідують лекції та семінари по Теоріїдержави і права, історії Росії та інші предмети. Раз на тиждень, завівторках, у нас практичні заняття з англійської мови. На останньомууроці ми читаємо і переводимо тексти про правовій системі в Англії. Текстибувають дуже складними. Мені потрібно дві години, щоб підготувати їх. Янамагаюся отримувати тільки хороші та відмінні оцінки з усіх предметів. Явпевнений, що я стану хорошим фахівцем.

My working day begins at 9 am and is over at 6 p.m. When I come tothe service I study documents, speak with people and works with thecomputer.

When I come to the home I begin to study textbook, write check worksin the English, Theory of State and Law, History, Philosophy and othersubjects. It took me two hours every day to get ready with it. I will tryto get only good and excellent marks for my subjects.

Two times in year I will have a session, in which I will have a testand exam by different subjects.

I am sure I will become a good specialist.

FROM THE HISTORY OF MILITIA TRAINING

The first militia schools were founded in Moscow in May 1918, thenin Petrograd in April 1919. They trained law enforcement officers for
Moscow, Petrograd, Kiev and then for the whole country. The number ofqualified militia workers was insufficient. That was some new militiaschools and courses were opened in different cities of Russia.

The teachers of the first militia schools and courses were the newlyformed Soviet militia's workers. Being practical workers they prepared thestudents to perform their duties of a law enforcement officer property.

The term of studies at those first militia schools and courses wasnot very long - about three or four months. Some of those schools andcourses were the basis for the secondary and higher militia schools openingall over the country.

THE BRITISH POLICE

The British police officer - sometimes called the " bobby "after Sir
Robert Peel, the founder of the police force - is well-known figure toeverybody, who sees British films. Policemen keep law and order eitherwalking in the streets or driving in cars. In Britain the police areorganized very differently from many other countries. Britain has nonational police force, instead, there is a separate police force for eachof 52 areas into which the country is divided. Each has a police authority
- A committee of local county councilors and magistrates.

It is unusual for members of one force to operate in another's areaunless they are asked to give assistance. A Chief Constable (their seniorofficer of a force) sometimes may ask for assistance of London's policeforce, based at New Scotland Yard - known simply as "the Yard".

The British police generally do not carry guns, except in North
Ireland. Only a few police are regularly armed - for instance, those guardpoliticians, diplomats or who patrol airports.
